Hutchinson | Elliot St Maurice | | Captain | Son of Bury Victor Hutchinson, Solicitor; was born in England; educated at King's College School, London, and spent the early part of his life in the redwoods of California and on the plains as a cowboy. Returning to England he became a solicitor and member of the firm of Hutchinson and Sons, Lincoln's Inn Fields. He went to SA in 1896 during the Matabele rebellion, and was admitted as a solicitor in Rhodesia, where he practised until the war, when he joined the Rhodesian Frontier Force, serving as Lieutenant, in the Rhodesian Volunteers. He was severely wounded at the commencement at Tuli; was sent home as one of the delegates to interview Mr Chamberlain, on behalf of the SA Vigilance Assoc, in connection with the peace terms. On returning to SA he took command of G squad of 2nd Kitchener's Fighting Scouts, and saw much fighting with Colonel Wilson's column in the N Transvaal and ORC, being mentioned in despatches by Lord Kitchener for conspicuous gallantry at Blauwkrantz, ORC He was on the Staff and Special Intelligence at Pretoria at the close of the war, when he resumed his practice as a solicitor in the firm of Hutchinson, Sons, and Russell, of Johannesburg and London.
