Hickey | R | | | BSACM Mashonaland 1890 (0). The following detail is extracted from Men Who Made Rhodesia, by Colonel A. S. Hickman: 'When a strong force of Portugese under Colonel Ferreira occupied Macequece this party advanced to oppose them, and whilst Captain Heyman went forward with a flag of truce in an attempt to negotiate, Hickey was left to occupy and fortify a position on Chua Hill, which he did to good effect. On 11th May the hill was attacked, and after severe fighting in which the Portugese officers showed great courage, they were repulsed by rifle fire, and particularly with the aid of a seven pounder gun which `Hickey had dragged up the hill and kept concealed. On 12 May 1891 the fort at Macequece was occupied without opposition.’ Hickey was subsequently commissioned as a Sub. Lieutenant on 15 September 1891, taking his discharge on 22 December of the same year. He moved to Canada and during the Great War served with the rank of Major. BSACM undated, one clasp, Mashonaland 1890 (Sgt. Hickey, R., B. S. A. C. P.). DNW July 2001 £900.
