Gedye | James Banfield | | Captain | GEDYE, JAMES BANFIELD, Captain, was born in Cape Colony, South Africa, in 1877, fifth son of the Reverend Edwin Gedye. He served in the Boer War, in Cape Colony, Orange River Colony and the Transvaal, 1899-1902. He served in Montmorency's Scouts, 1899-1900; 2nd Kitchener's Fighting Scouts, 1900 to 1902; was wounded on 27 December 1901, in Orange River Colony. He received the Queen's Medal, 1899-1900, with three clasps; the King's Medal, 1900-1902, with clasps, and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 31 October 1902]: "James Banfield Gedye, Captain, British South Africa Police. In recognition of services during the operations in South Africa". He also received the Coronation Medal, June, 1902.
