PRESENTATION TO LETHAM VOLUNTEERS.

The two young men, John CHALMERS and George BRUCE, who went out to South Africa under Captain Hoyer Millar, and who came home last week, were entertained at a public meeting in the Feuars’ Hall, Letham, last night, and presented with valuable gifts. Mr David Crow, Elmbank House, presided. The hall was crowded. Mr Crow referred to the meeting sixteen months ago on the eve of the men’s departure, and spoke feelingly of Private David DORWARD, who died at the Cape. Messrs CHALMERS and BRUCE were each presented with a beautiful gold badge bearing a suitable inscription and a purse containing sovereigns. The presentations were made on behalf of the subscribers by the Rev. Mr Boyle, Kirkden, and Mr T.M. Henry, M.A., Letham. Telegrams of regret for absence were read by the Chairman from the Rev. Hugh Macmaster and Major Buyars. Mr John CHALMERS thanked the people of Letham for the cordiality of their reception and for their splendid gifts, and gave a graphic account of his experiences in South Africa. Afterwards an excellent programme of songs and recitations was gone through and admirably sustained by local friends and by friends from Friockheim and Forfar. The meeting in every respect was very successful, and votes of thanks were awarded to the Chairman, and to Messrs Japp & Miller for the great interest they had shown in connection with it.
