Ponsonby | William Randall | | Lieutenant | PONSONBY, WILLIAM RANDALL, Lieutenant, was born in August 1874, eldest son of Colonel Justinian Gordon Ponsonby. He served in the South African War in Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry, and in the South African Constabulary, and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 19 April 1901]: "W R Ponsonby, Lieutenant, Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry. In recognition of services during the operations in South Africa". The Insignia were presented by the King 29 October 1901. He was gazetted to the 3rd Dragoon Guards and retired. Captain Ponsonby married, in 1902, Lilian Patteson, daughter of Sir Patteson Nickalls and Florence, daughter of T S Womersley. He died 18 January 1919.
