Robbins | John Henry | | Lieutenant | He was killed in action at Helpmakaar Farm, near Winburg, ORC, August 25th, 1900. He was born in 1875, and educated at Highgate School. He went to South Africa in 1894, and on war being declared joined the Queenstown Corps as a private, and was quickly promoted sergeant, being afterwards granted a commission. The day Lieutenant Robbins was killed the Queenstown Rifle Volunteers made a gallant defence. In Helpmakaar Farmhouse they succeeded in keeping off more than a 1,000 Boers, with three guns, under Olivier. When called on to surrender, the volunteers refused with contempt to do so, although 132 rounds from tbe guns had been fired at the house. Lieutenant Robbins and those with him kept their position for two days, when help arrived, and the Boers retired. He was buried in Winburg cemetery. He was mentioned in despatches, LG, April 16th, 1901.
