Harvey | Charles Bateson | | Major | He was killed in action near Colesberg, January 4th 1900. He the younger son of Sir Robert Bateson Harvey, Bart, of Langley Park, Bucks. He was born January 1859, educated at Eton, and entered the 10th Hussars in 1881, being promoted Captain July 1889, and Major 1897. He served in Egypt in 1884 and was present at the battles of El Teb and Tamai, receiving the medal with clasp and bronze star. He held the post of adjutant of Yeomanry Cavalry from 1894-98. In the action in which Major Harvey was killed, it was found that the Boers had during the night established themselves in rear of the English position. The enemy were, however, driven out, and in their retreat were charged by the 10th Hussars and a squadron of Inniskilling Dragoons. Ninety were killed and twenty one prisoners taken, while our loss was six killed, among them Major Harvey.
