Hi, I’m researching my GGF known as William Carruthers. I found in the medal section he used William Boles as his name vs Carruthers. His regiment number is 4390. He did return to Northern Ireland as married my GGGran in 1907. Just wondering if there is anyone with more experience than I on seeing if there is any other details on him from his time In the service.

Copies of the 4 pages of his (4390 William Boles) service records can be downloaded from Find My Past duly annotated in red "alias Carruthers".

He enlisted 13 Feb 1900 aged 18 years 6 months and four days later joined the 3rd (Prince of Wales) Dragoon Guards at Dundalk. Like he lied about his name he may also have lied about his age.

Embarked for S Africa 15 Jan 1901 and arrived back home on 26 Aug 1904. 76 days later he was discharged to the Army Reserve and 7 years later fully discharged from the Army on 12 Feb 1912.

For his service in SA he was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal with 5 clasps - Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901 & South Africa 1902. He missed out on the King's Medal by 3 months because he had only been in SA for 15 months by the time the war ended.

The given names of his parents are given as John & Mary and they lived at Guiltagh (?), Fermanagh when he attested. He gave his place of birth as Maguires Bridge, Fermanagh.

The originals are held by the National Archives, reference WO97.

Hello Geoff
Welcome to the Forum.
Your G Grandfather was entitled to a Queens South Africa medal with 5 clasps.
Cape Colony,Orange Free State, Transvaal plus date clasps 1901 & 1902.

If you could provide a date of birth and where he lived it may help in providing some clues regarding your G G Grandfather.
