I was wondering if anyone had any information on this young man.

From the little I have been able to find out he was a member of the Natal Police when he was killed at the Siege of Ladysmith.

Curiously, Gracey and his death is not mentioned in H P Holt's history of the Natal Police. I will do some more checking.

Gracey's death is a puzzle, since I would have expected it to be recorded by the historians of the Natal Police.. Holt copied most of his information on the Natal Mounted Police(1874-1894) and Natal Police (1894-1913) from records kept by W J Clarke, the last Chief Commissioner of the Natal Police. Since Clarke did not mention Gracey's death in his record of the Boer War published in the NP magazine, The Nongqai, Holt also made no mention of it. There has been talk for many years of publishing Clarke's diaries in full, and I expect there may be a record in them. I no longer have a copy of NP Sgt Dick Seed's diary of the war, but hopefully David will check to see if Gracey is mentioned.

I think the simple fact of the matter is that deaths from enteric had become so common that another one coming the day before the Siege was relieved, Gracey's passing was unnoticed.

Morning All

Gracey is on [/map] The Register as "Gracie" - as per Watt (NFF shows Gracy), but it shows the cause of death as enteric, he was not killed.

The Times for March 5, 1900 confirms this.

The Facebook page says he is interred in Bangor, is there any proof for this? Just a handful of bodies were repatriated for burial in the UK.

Thanks for your help and information.

Muerig... I have amended the entry to say "Remembered" rather than "Interred"... my mistake... my excuse is that it was late and I'd just added a number of CWGC burials :)
Would you be able to send me a copy of the note in The Times?

As for "Fell" rather that "Died"... The family may not have been informed of the cause of death... or just that it sounded better which has happened before.

Would there be any record of when he enlisted?

Eddie

I wonder what took him to South Africa?
