It confirms the date as the 27th. As it says the telegram was dated 2nd March, it could be that the date in the Roll was taken from that.

Brett... I notice the Service no is given here, and in the newspaper, as 2398 not 2308 as stated previously.

The number is 2308 on the NP Enlistment Register, and on a supplementary QSA roll dated 27/3/1908. Just to muddy the waters further the QSA roll gives the date of death as 2 March 1900. That was probably the day it was recorded in the NP HQ in Maritzburg.
