One of my acquisitions today was a single clasps QSA to a 1709 Trooper Arthur Wells ILH

On checking the medal rolls for his entitlement I found as with most South African Troopers he had served with others units, this led to a trail:-
First his ILH roll which confirms the single clasp.

Second led to the Procectorate

This roll listed the Canadanian Scouts

The last roll was a surprise which was the Mafeking T.G.

This roll shows him as a Mafeking defender with DofM clasp.
Now I am starting to get a little confused, it seems to be the same man according to the rolls, any opinions welcomed.

Confused from the North

Evening Mike,

I was happy to get an ILH at a reasonable price, I should not of researched it
The "paper trail" on the roll leads to this man but it looks like a "clerical error" I got excited when I saw the Protectorate Regt. which then got me thinking of Mafeking.

Thanks for looking
Paul ;)

Gentlemen,
WO100/239 suggests you are looking at two differant men!

In addition, he is clearly shown as number 567 in WO100/263 for service with the Provisional Mounted Police/Orange River Colony Mounted Police.
He was number 38311 in the Cape Colony Cyclist Corps, so the entitlement appears to be Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902.
135/38311 Trooper A Wells Canadian Scouts, having enliisted in East London on the 11th of October 1901, discharged on the 19th of April 1902, cannot have been serving in the CCCC at the same time, unless he was in fact actually Doctor Who! :woohoo:
So the obvious thing to do now would be to look at WO126/55-65 and WO126/19-22, then compare what you find with WO126/15-16 and WO126/105, I have to say I would be very surprised if they all match.

Hello Paul,
I certainly have not "cleared it up" an interesting recipient, a very good medal indeed and I believe you should now take him further, a lot of ILH went out from here, so it would be worth looking at WO126/55-65 at the very least.
Kind regards Frank
