M&E say 'Richard John Stone-Raper (sometimes 'Rapier') saw initial service in the Second Boer War with the Kimberley Volunteer Regiment (as Sergeant Major) and at No. 3 Redoubt with the Kimberley Town Guard. Research also suggests that he was taken prisoner near Potchefstroom on 2 July 1900, after which he was later released.bHe then served with ‘D’ Squadron of the Kimberley Light Horse between 14 June 1901 and 30 June 1902, during which time he was slightly wounded in action at Mark’s Drift, near Douglas, on 21 May 1902 – as listed in ‘The Boer War Casualty Roll’ by Palmer. Upon the disbandment of the regiment his stated place of residence was given as Johannesburg.'
