Adrian

I am seeking further information about Algernon's family. I understand you have quoted where he was born and the jobs he had. Are you able to elaborate where the information came from? Do you know who his parents were and any siblings? He attended Felsted School in 1885-86, and as the School's assistant archivist, we have very little information about him. Any help would be appreciated.

QSA (3) Defence of Kimberley, Orange Free State, Transvaal (4539 Pte. J. J. Green, 1: L. N. Lanc: Regt.);
[ KSA (2) ];
Kimberley Star, 'a'.

Together with a split and polished spent round, engraved 'Kimberley Siege 1900'.

John James Green was born at Liverpool in 1876 and was a carter by trade on his joining the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment in August 1894. He served with the unit in South Africa in the Boer War from 1 February 1899-25 June 1902. During that time his unit, at that time at half Battalion strength - and supported by a handful of Gunners, Sappers and Medical Staff - formed the only regular troops present during the famed Siege of Kimberley.

Having been advanced Lance-Corporal, Green was released in August 1902 and re-engaged in June 1906. He was discharged for the final time in August 1910.
