Dave

Just a quick one, I remember I got a copy of one of the original photos that appear in this edition of the ILN that you have posted, from the photo archive in Museum Afrika in Johannesburg.

There are some errors in the ILN naming. Seated on the right in the first photo is Walter Karri Davies (W. D. Davies) not Dr W.T.F. Davies who went on to win the DSO with as the ILH Medical Officer during the Boer War.

Gentlemen,
This whole sorry tale has never failed to keep me very amused over the years, I remember being quite surprised by the way both the ILN and The Times, in particular had managed to whip up the public to almost a mass hysteria.

Doubtless, Flora Shaw had been hard at work, Majuba Hill was a period favourite.

Here is some info that will help you get photo's and their trial docs.

LINK TO MUSEUM AFRICA AFRIKANA LIBRARY PHOTO ARCHIVE
RESEARCH
HISTORICAL IMAGE COLLECTION,

Link to Transvaal Archive, just put search term in (i.e. surname) in first field and 1896 in start and end dates field and search.
This will give you references to the docs with their name, you still have to get someone to go to Pretoria and draw and copy them.
This is the researcher that I use, he is very good and is familiar with the archive as the SAC records are stored there,
[email protected]

Hope this helps, unfortunately I moved out of JHB in 1998 so cannot help with personal visits.
