This image comes from a Glendining’s catalogue of March 2000. It is a sample from a lot of Indian Army pictures. It is described as a ‘very fine group of Corps of Guides, Infantry and Cavalry all winners of the Order of Merit for bravery in the field, circa 1903’

I thought there may be a QSA in there so I scanned the image at 600dpi to have a look. Sadly all I could see was the deep clasps of the IGS.

I thought you would enjoy the picture all the same.

What a really great picture! Sometimes I wonder why those long medal groups to Indian troops never seem to come up. Interesting to see the man with the Martini-Henry Mk.IV (long lever) in the front row and another chap (standing, LHS) with a .577" Snider.
Regards
IL.

A great picture certainly and a few more IOMs than I will ever have. My IOMs are to Bachan Singh for Central Africa and Dost Mohammad Khan for Sanah's Post..

If you ever see a picture of these ( I have now discovered that he had a Delhi 1911 as a pensioner) I would love a picture of the man they are attached to......

Dost Mohammad Khan

David,

I remember being the underbidder for the QSA to Dost Mohammad Khan when it came up for auction. What a lovely QSA.

Listed by Chris Dixon, Spring 2002

QSA bronze (46 Syce Rayappen, Supply and Transport Corps, Bangalore Dist.)

Chris says it is rare to include the district in the naming. Is that the case?

Cost £250.

As a comparison on the naming premium, this appeared in the same catalogue

QSA bronze (95 Muleteer Shah Newar, Supply and Transport Corps). £150

I did look into it at one stage. Sometimes the District appears before the Corps number with the Presidency after the S&TC. Umballa, Secunderabad, Multan are common districts. A quick look at DNW archives gives 15 syces of the S&TC - 11 have the district - 3 do not. I have not got an example. Certainly will not pay a premium for it. Far rarer and exciting finds to be found than just a district on the medal. Interesting perhaps but not rare. Chris bought the medal at Baldwin's the year before for £90 which might explain the rarity comment B)

A much under loved medal

RP 95 Muleteer Shah Nawaz (CC;OFS;Tvl) Spinks'01 £95, Dixon’s ’02 £150, Aberdeen Medals 2010 £265, Neate Auctions 2011 & Neate 2012 £245
