Hi Moranthorse,

Thanks for sharing; if he were born in South Africa then there are 3 "Andrew Matthew Crew" options available.

1. Born 1882 in Ficksburg Orange Free State & died 1957 in Newcastle Natal; possibly the most likely and copy of Death Cert below.
2. One married in 1877
3. One married in 1875 (born 1852); would'nt be surprised as the one in (2)

To help me I use either a DOB or signature from a marriage certificate and then match to the Attestation paper.

Good luck & let us know if you can track down anymore information to narrow it down.

Regards,
Sturgy

Steve,

Sadly, his attestation paper is missing all the important details

His number here is 37284 and 284 on his medal.

The fact he enlisted in Ficksburg and planned to return there suggests that Sturgy's death notice may well be the correct one.

Hi David,

I think what you have provided may be good enough as it gives us a copy of his young (19 year old) signature.

I found the signature of "my" Crew from Ficksburg from 1939 (from his wifes estate files) so the signature below would be from a 38 year older Crew. The "Cr" in "Crew' is not a good match; the rest is ok.

I'm sill not entirely convinced, not the best signature match out there, but I think it may be good enough:

A M Crew death notice, bottom signature also A M Crew
Father and son perhaps?
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave

Hi Dave,

Yes; I also think that would be Father & Son; with "AM Crew" listed as Major Child No. 3 on the list.

That would explain why I was getting hits for an Andrew Matthew Crew born circa 1852; it was his father.

Sturgy
