QSA (4) Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902 (805 Tpr. E. Scanlan. Driscoll’s Scts.)

Ernest Scanlan was born in Southsea, Hampshire, on 17 March 1870 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Second Class on 24 April 1885. He was shore discharged on 21 March 1900, having risen to the rank of Able Seaman, and also spent a lot of time (over 300 days!) in the cells, mainly for breaking out of various ships. On discharge from the Royal Navy he made his way to South Africa and served during the Boer War in Driscoll’s Scouts from 9 August 1901, before being discharged medically unfit on 1 January 1902 (and thereby just qualifying for the South Africa 1902 date clasp). His character on discharge is described as ‘very good’.

My gratitude and thanks go to Zimscout (Tim) who bought the Summers QSA on last week's Noonan's auction and then, very kindly, professed to this fact in a recent post.

The long and the short of it is that a swap took place and, while Tim is now the owner of a group to Frederick Ensor (Driscoll's), I was able to reunite Summers' QSA with his BSAC to the very scarce Swanson's Volunteer Corps (only 9 members strong)

Thanks again Tim

Regards

Rory

284 TROOPER ANDREW MATTHEW CREW: DRISCOLL'S SCOUTS

Andrew Matthew Crew initially served with regimental number 450 in 'A' Troop of the Farmer's Guard, despite not having a very Dutch/Afrikaans name! The majority of men who served with this unit were Boers who opted to side with the imperial forces from the onset of hostilities or were 'hensoppers' , Boers who were captured and defected to the 'other side'.
I have no idea, at present, what the circumstances were for Trooper Crew.

He attested to Driscoll's Scouts on 8th June 1901 and was discharged on 30th November 1901.

Queen's South Africa medal awarded to Trooper Crew bearing clasps for Orange Free State, Transvaal and South Africa 1901.

Officially impressed naming to the rim. H. M. being in error and should be A. M.

Regimental naming to the rim.

Very pleased to pick up an example of the Queen's South Africa medal to Driscoll's Scouts, which are seldom found in the market place.

Any further information on A. M. Crew would be most gratefully received.
