He is buried in Stellawood Cemetery and Crematorium, Durban. I cannot fond a picture of his grave.

He and Mary had 8 children.

Thomas Henry b. 24 February 1906, married Noreen Moriarty on 3 Sep 1946.
Mary Florence Hilliar
May Iris Viljoen
Edith Smith
Benjamin Maher
Stella Veronica van der Berg
Barbara Dorkin
Fay Trixie Hounson

I have looked through the recipients of the SAGS but not found a likely match.

He is listed in 1924 as a company owner (of the trading store?): archive.gazettes.africa/archive/za/1924/...24-02-01-no-1365.pdf

He was insolvent in 1927: archive.gazettes.africa/archive/za/1927/...27-09-30-no-1660.pdf

There is a Facebook post from January 2024 from someone called Imani Donkin asking 'Does anyone know or have info on the Merber and Carter family in Lusikisiki'. There is a Transkei history group which may be very useful. www.facebook.com/groups/1792890437606940...fhzq0y8a09MCVBE&_rdr

There is a picture of him here: familio.org/persons/c48d0937-51c0-4bcc-be2a-444b428fd0b5

Thank you for these fascinating links. I may submit details of Henry's service to the Facebook page. It could all be new information for their thread.

It works out that Henry Merber was 99 years old on 4th February 1958 when he was issued his replacement QSA! That must be some sort of a record!

Cheers Steve

QSA (1) Transvaal 1091 Tpr: W.B.Wilson. Steinaecker's Horse.;
KSA (2) (1091 Tpr: W.B.Wilson Steinaecker's H.)

William Black Wilson, glass cutter, born 15 Dec 1874 of Melbourne; Enlisted 09 Nov 1900; Discharged 07 Feb 1903.

Steinaecker's Horse was raised in June 1900 by Major F.Von Steinaecker, a former Prussian Army officer for operations in Zululand and on the Swaziland border of the Transvaal. The units operations moved further into the very wild country to the west of the Portuguese border, gradually extending their raids to the north and south for great distances, thereby denying the enemy the use of the eastern lowlands for rest and recuperation. The unit was one of the most complete and self supporting groups in the country.
