Arthur William Meaton was born in 1874 in Dalston, Middlesex. He enlisted in 1894 and served as a Private with the 1st Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. After serving at home for two years, he spent the subsequent two years in Gibraltar until 16 January 1898. He then spent ten months in Egypt. He then spent the following year in Crete before returning home. His last campaign abroad was between November 1899 and August 1902 in South Africa. He returned Home after the war and was discharged on 31 December 1905.

Henry Hutchinson was a 22-year-old Shoemaker from the village of Startforth near Barnard Castle, Yorkshire when he attested for the Northumberland Fusiliers on 13th June 1892. He served for 259 days in Egypt and is confirmed on the medal rolls of the 1st Battalion for the Queen’s Sudan Medal and the Khedive’s medal with Khartoum clasp.

He transferred to the Army Reserve on 8th June 1899 but was recalled for service on 9th October 1899. He served for 2 years and 316 days in South Africa and was made Prisoner of War during the action at Stormberg on 10th December 1899 when the Boers captured nearly 700 British troops.

Henry Hutchinson transferred to the Army Reserve for the second time on 26th May 1903 and discharged in July 1908.

C&T say Hutchinson is confirmed on the medal rolls of the 2nd Battalion for both the Queen’s and King’s South Africa medals with the attached clasps.
