The QSA to Lt Hon Algernon Littleton

The Honourable Algernon Joshua Percy Littleton was born in 1878, and was the second son of Edward George Percy Littleton, 3rd Baron Hatherton, CMG, of Teddesley Park, Stafford. The latter was formerly Major and Colonel in the Grenadier Guards and sometime Military Secretary to the Governor General of Canada.

Algernon Littleton was educated at Eton and Pembroke College, Cambridge. He served during the Second Boer War with Roberts Horse, firstly as a Sergeant (No. 2332), 18 January 1900 - 8 September 1900, and latterly as a Lieutenant, 19 May 1901 - 10 October 1901 (in the remarks column on the medal roll it gives ‘During siege of Ladysmith was attached to Manchester Regt. before joining Roberts Horse). He was also employed as part of the Chief Censor’s Staff at Cape Town.

After the war Littleton travelled extensively throughout Tasmania and Australia as a whole. He contracted Multiple Sclerosis, and returned to the UK where he married Alice Maud Lewes in 1913. His wife, the daughter of a former Consul to Shanghai, was a qualified nurse and helped to care for him during the remainder of his life.

They resided at “Tendring”, Belle Vue Road, Southbourne, Bournemouth. Littleton died in September 1951.

The involvement in the siege of Ladysmith is intriguing.

The medal roll does contain that note:



The officer above Littleton on the roll, Lt C J R M Learmouth does have entitlement to the DoL clasp. The note mentions Roberts' Horse so does relate to Littleton.

John Farquharson Oliver was born at Havant, Hampshire in May 1876. The son of Captain S. Oliver, of Rutherford Lodge, Worthing he was educated at Sherborne. Serving initially as a Corporal in Roberts' Horse, he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Manchester Regiment on 19 May 1900, being promoted Lieutenant on 13 July 1901. During the campaign he saw action on numerous occasions and was present on the expeditions to Prieska, Sunnyside and Dewetsdorp, commanding a section during 1900 (War Services of the Army, 1920 refers).

Oliver was next attached to the West African Frontier Force, Lagos Battalion from 21 October 1903. With the commencement of hostilities, he was commissioned Captain in the 11th Battalion, Manchester Regiment and was mentioned in the desptaches for services in the Dardanelles (London Gazette 28 January 1916, refers) and later wounded (Manchester Evening News, 19 October 1916, refers).

Another link between Roberts' Horse and the Manchester Regiment.

Wounded in action then taken as Prisoner of War at Sanna's Post.

Lieut & Quartermaster Hawkins is listed alongside Captain P.D. Dray as Wounded during the battle and subsequently taken prisoner of war, Lieut Horne was also captured but not wounded and of the same regiment, Capt. Carrington and Smith were severely wounded but were not captured.

Lieut Hawkins had joined the South Africa Light Horse on 20th November 1899, transferred to Robert's Horse on 24th February 1900, serving as Lieutenant & Quartermaster, the next month he was Captured in the defeat at Sannah's Post, and was released around the 20th June 1900, being announced in the list of returned Officers alongside Veterinary Captain Bray and Lieut Horne also of Robert's Horse. After his release he joined the Military Government, Pretoria Staff on 14th June 1900.
