"At Rensburg, Captain Jackson, 7th Dragoon Guards, was mortally wounded. Sergeant Broadwood and Private McKinnon gallantly stuck to him amidst a hail of bullets and successfully carried him in."

DCM London Gazette 31 October 1902 - A.O. 10/03; Knapdaar 13 January 1902. Details London Gazette 25 April 1902: ‘Oxfordshire Light Infantry. 3391 Serjeant T. Cripps; 3421 Private E. H. Clack; 5882 Private W. Townsend. For their dash in capture of wagons at Knapdaar, on 13th January, 1902. They rode down six Boers and three wagons, though exposed to considerable fire.’ Both privates promoted corporals by Commander-in-Chief.

MID London Gazette 10 September 1901.

Sergeant Cripps served with the 8th Battalion Mounted Infantry in the Boer War, and with the Military Foot Police in France from 21 January 1915.
