Jon,

My mistake. Brother Andries died in 1880. It was his son, Andries, who received the Union Medal, which is what you said a few posts ago.

Got there in the end!

David - indeed! So an uncle/nephew getting the 1910. I wonder how many bothers / father+son etc there are. The roll has 4 van Zyls in the Cape and there are 7 de Villiers. Thanks for posting that group - what date was the catalogue it as sold in?

Jon,

That would be interesting to investigate.

The pair sold at Noble Numismatics in this morning's auction.

Best wishes
David

Whoever bought the Stockenstrom pair had better resign themselves to being the custodian of a broken group until the end of time.

See attached photos - on a visit to the Albany Museum in Grahamstown I was allowed to photograph some of the medals in their collection. If memory serves (confirmed by the photos) G.H. Stockenstrom also had the SAGS medal...

I note the SAGS is not mentioned as omitted from the group by the auction house?

Rory,

That does answer the question about the location of his KSA and also opens up a whole new area regarding his service in the earlier wars too.

You're right, there was no mention of his SAGS entitlement.

As he died without issue, I wonder if his medals were split amongst the family with half finding their way to the museum and the other half into the collectors' sphere?

I guess knowing one medal is missing reduces the disappointment of knowing there is another missing too.

Thank you again
David

Indeed David, I was mortified at the sight of the broken group and quizzed the Curator about where the medals came from - they were donated to the museum by a relative in the 70's.

Your supposition about the splitting up of the group is spot on - very sad.

Regards

Rory
