Hello Susan,
If that grave is able to be located exactly, I absolutely urge you to place some sort of permanent memorial, if at all possible, Trooper George Smith deserves nothing less, it was a very sad end to the life of a brave young man, who might well have achieved Corporal rank within his regiment in due course, to loose his life because of illness was tragic after all of his prior service, in particular, on campaign, in South Africa.
Regards again,
Frank Kelley

Hi Frank
I've contacted the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maindenhead again, asking how the plots work and how I would find plot V147. I had already thought that a permanent memorial would be appropriate and be assured that I will do all I can to achieve this.
I suppose it was not envisaged that any of the family would ever visit his grave from Stanton, and presumably the cost of purchasing a grave would have been prohibitive for them - hence, I suppose, the brass plaque in the church.
I don't expect any family members would have been at the funeral either; his dying on the 9 March and being buried on 11. Perhaps they would hardly have know that he was dead.
He is not forgotten here - and the information has gone to scattered family members in America and South Africa.
Many thanks for your help and interest - I will keep you informed!

Hello Susan,
I just think it is so important, I do understand how this sort of thing happened in the first place, it simply came down to money, times were often very hard for folk in Kind Edwards day, sadly, not unlike today, but, even just a small simple piece of marble with his details is enough, he really deserves it, they were superb cavalrymen and the absolute cream of the British Army.
Kind regards Frank Kelley
