Mike,
Before the nineteenth century their duties were, as their name suggests, simply the protection, of the actual person, of the Monarch, after that, the duty becomes more symbolic, however, all three regiments continued to provide the Queens (or Kings) Life Guard at Horse Guards and mounted escorts as required from their three barracks, Combermere in Windsor, Albany Street, Regents Park and Knightsbridge, Hyde Park.
They did then, as now, provide men for the State opening of Parliament, Commons and Lords, escorts for members of foreign governments and Heads of State, as well as the Royal weddings and funerals and "one off" parades and so on, it was always a most impressive sight with a full Sovereigns Escort which would have been seven officers and one hundred and nine Corporals and Troopers
They really did and still do take matters very seriously indeed.
For example, as recently as 1971, with the Emperor of Japan on a visit to London whilst on the Mall, a fellow rushed for the crowd and made for the Emperors carriage.
The Escort Commander on that day was Major John Fuller, a Life Guard Field Officer, he was riding on the left wheel of the Emperors carriage, as Escort Commander, with Silver Stick riding on the right wheel as the Field Officer would have normally done, the latter, was, I would think, merely exercising his "right" to take part and "dust off" his Albert and plume, but, he was where Fuller should have been!
Major Fuller raised his sword and "charged" the now terrified man, his life was only saved because he saw Major Fuller and the business end of his state sword coming toward his person at speed, he turned and fled running into the arms of the Metropolitan Police!
I like the sound of your Trumpeter, no pun intended, I suspect rather more than the current neighbours would, who are situated in the prosperous suburbs next to Combermere these days, the trumpet calls can be heard throughout the day along with the roar of the CVR(T)'s engines!
Kind regards Frank
