OK I know this is wayyyyyyy off base but the symbol is the same as:

A Calgary football team called The Calgary Tigers....... The whole team joined up for WW1 and only 4 of the team of 21 came home.......
Also it is the symbol for the present Calgary Transit.......

LOL

As to South African I cannot find anything, sorry.......

Mike, I don't think you are "way off" base, to be quite honest.

I have a similar Cap badge. It was with a number of items that date stamped say they were from the Anglo boer war. The family is unaware of any person who was in South Africa during the combat- but since these were all in the possession of my Grandfather it seems unlikely that it was not a relative........or a lover?
The Bullet clip is Stamped DM (Presumably Deutsche Mauser?) 1896. The sword is stamped 9.1900 and has the imperial markings of E (Presumably King Edward VII). When I found the stash originally there was also a pair of leather gauntlets and Black leather leggings. There are the 2 badges and a single pip that has been Blackened. The Sword and then a strip of Khaki fabric which did have the Welsh Dragon and a WELSH shoulder flash?
Any Idea's?
Sadly the other files were too large to be supported but can be found at 1drv.ms/f/s!AmfhRchrdKfagflpdjnR1K6TgkigSw
