Hi
A friend has a Queen's South Africa / Dundee Tribute Medal pair.
I have not actually seen them but apparently both are named to : 2234 J. H. Payne of
the Royal Scots Fusiliers.
The QSA bears the clasps for : CAPE COLONY/TUGELA HEIGHTS/RELIEF OF LADYSMITH/TRANSVAAL
and the recipient is also entitled to a King's Medal.
All I have been able to find out so far is that all (most/some?) of these medals appear to have been given to members of
the Volunteer Battalions of the Royal Highlanders.

Can anyone confirm (or otherwise) that a regular solider with the RSF might also have received such a medal?
Plus although what named examples there appear to be were privately named would any member have any images of naming on one of these medals?

Thanks

Chris

Chris,

The Dundee Tribute Medal page ( www.angloboerwar.com/medals-and-awards/2...medals/d/4115-dundee ) lists the known recipients and he is not listed.

It would be good to inspect the two medals if you have the opportunity.

I do not know how they are named.

There are papers for a James Payne, born in 1872 in Falkirk, Stirling.

Good morning David
Many thanks for your prompt and very helpful response.
My knowledge on BW tribute medals, apart from Yorkshire examples is extremely sketchy so the information you have given me is very useful indeed.
I am hoping to get down to my friend's at the end of this week and all being well I should be able to photograph the naming.
If that proves possible I'll post the pictures here.
It has turned out though as I feared.
Thanks again

Chris,

It would be great to see some pictures if you have the opportunity but appreciate this may not be possible.

The Dundee medal was issued unnamed so it will be interesting to see how it has been inscribed.

Best wishes
David
