Don't forget that link takes Annie to John Stirling's book, it is the regular battalions he is talking about and not the militia, Hanna, did not arrive in the country until late spring 1901.

Angloannie wrote: Hello, I'm a new member so please be patient if I make mistakes or post things in the wrong place. I have joined the forum hoping to find details of a man who fought in the Boer War. I can't find his name or number listed under any of the searches. From his Attestation Papers: Enlisted age 17.
Posted to 5th Bn. Royal Irish Rifles 11.03.1899. Embodied 10.05.1900.
Embarked for S.A. 05.04 1901. Granted G.C. Pay @ 1/- 18.05.1902
Disembarked from S.A. 28.07.1902. Paid War Gratuity @ £6.5s.0d 14.08.02.
Exempt 1903 and 1904. Discharged (Termination of Engagement) 10.03.1905.
Name: Francis Hanna, No. 2954. Lived in Lisburn County Antrim and received the Queen's South Africa Medal.

Francis went on to re-enlist in WW1 and was killed at the Battle of the Somme in March 1918. Any ideas as to where I can details of where he was and what he was doing in South Africa would be most welcome.

Hi Again Frank. I have copies of 3 original handwritten forms 1. Army Form E504 (Enlistment), 2. Statement of Service of No. 2954 with last entry Terminated 10.3.1905 signed 5/RIR and 3. Description of F Hanna on Enlistment. There is no information about clasp or medal entitlement. The reason I know he has a medal is he is wearing it in an old photo I have of him in his RIR uniform when he re-enlisted in WW1. Thank you again for the information.

Annie,
I suspect life for Hanna was either reasonable or very hard indeed, depending on exactly where he was.
Paul,
Same regt, same traditions, same unform, but, not the same body of men unless attached.
Kind regards Frank

Thanks Paul for the link to the book. Even though it might not give me information on the period for in which I am looking regarding Francis Hanna, I might find it interesting. The Boer War is new to me as, until now, my interest in military history has been specific the Great War.

Annie,
The Anglo Boer War is often refered to as "the last of the gentlemen's war's, total rubbish, trust me, there was nothing, polite, honourable or chivalrous about that final year!
In fact, up on the high veldt in the Northern Transvaal, what we would call today "denial operations" were taking place, with members of the Field Intelligence Department, active on the border with Portuguese territory, there sole task, to destroy to enemy!
Regards Frank

Frank, since yesterday my eyes are slanted reading so much about this war. I would never have thought it would be so interesting and reading about it in the Main Menu really whetted my appetite. I have also read all I think there is to read on the RIR military history site as well as some others and I must say I don't know how this could have been referred to as a "gentlemen's war". This is a great site - thank you again for your help.
Regards, Annie
