Thanks, nice portrait...the artist has used a bit of artistic licence and taken the liberty of adding a QSA to the tunic of Younger, he would never had received his.

David,I might be off to Johannesburg in a few weeks but I wish I could have spent more time down in the Cape, but it is rather cold this time of the year. Our friend Adrian will be heading there soon, maybe he can pick up where I left off?

Regards
Brian

Brian,

Very observant of you. The portrait was completed by Charles Hardie in 1902 so I assume he thought he would just add in the QSA.

Yes, off to the Cape on Thursday. Not sure if the wife will be too happy to trawl around cemeteries though!! :(

Cheers

Adrian I guess not, Pat had the mutters with me as well...they just do not get it, I even steered her off to the local shops but she was back before my photo session was complete.

David I see there were 2 Priests in the 16th Lancers 4330 J. Priest and 4534 H.T. Priest, does Steve Watts list give initials, so we can identify which one died?

Quite possible they were related!

Here are some excerpts from The Times for the period giving a little more details.

They also clarify that Gatsworthy should be Sgt A Goldsworth. He was KIA 20 Dec 01.

Brian,

I will see what I can find on the way down to Cape Town.

I only stop 3 times during the 1700 Km trip. I will leave Durban at 20H00 on Thursday and arrive in Bloem at approx 2am fill up and have a coffee. Then Beaufort West at 8am fill up and breakfast. There are Boer War graves here so I will send the wife off for "Pad Kos" and have a look. Lastly, Matjiesfontein for lunch and a break. It's only 250 odd Km from Cape Town. I always stop at the Lord Milner Hotel and check out the Museum which has a few medals etc.

Matjiesfontein apparently had approx 12000 British troops stationed there during the ABW.

Other than that, Simonstown Old Cemetery when I go to the Naval Base (which I do every time i am in town) which has a few early Boer War graves and of course Maitland if I get the chance. The Archives will take a day or two. Lots of CP work to do.

Just got to send the wife to Cavendish Square and the Cape Quarters first for a couple of days!!! :cheer: :cheer:

Cheers
