A PRESENTATION.

Mr A. SHARPE, who recently returned from South Africa, was the recipient of a beautiful gold medal on Tuesday night, in recognition of his services during the South African war. The presentation came from the Workmen’s Club, and was made by the president, Mr E. Ashford, on the club's behalf. The affair took place in the reading-room of the institution, when the president said that it gave him unalloyed pleasure in making the presentation, and he felt sure he was only voicing the sentiments of all present. Mr SHARPE suitably responded, and in a few straight, manly words told them that he did not think he had done aught of which to be ashamed. He had always tried to do his duty, as had the other boys who had gone from here. (Applause). The inscription read: — "Presented to Alf. Sharpe, for heroic services during the South African campaign — 1900-1". On the reverse side is a soldier in a kneeling posture, with rifle raised. The medal was an exact replica of the one presented some time ago to Mr R. GRACE, and is in fulfilment of a motion passed by the Workmen's Club that, as a body, it should recognise in some form the services of two of its members. The jewel was supplied by Mr H. Godwin, and betokened taste and skill.
