Cape Government Railways –
Fireman Walter LAWRENCE

Presentation made by the Rev. S. Butler.

"The presents were made to Mr Lawrence as tokens of respect for the man who provided Col. Plumer with his first armoured train. Mr Lawrence volunteered to take the train, with its freight of women and children, from Mafeking to Col. Plumer. The van was blown to pieces, shot after shot went through the train, and bridge after bridge blew up after the train had passed over. The guard only was killed" (Newcastle Evening Chronicle, 18/07/1901).

Presentation to a Mafeking Hero.

An interesting presentation was made at Felling on Wednesday night. Mr Walter LAWRENCE, from Mafeking, who is at present staying with his parents at Felling, was presented by his Felling friends with an address, a gold albert, a medal, and a knife. The Rev. S. Butler made the presentation on behalf of the subscribers. The presents were made to Mr LAWRENCE as tokens of respect for the man who provided Col. Plumer with his first armoured train. Mr LAWRENCE volunteered to take the train, with its freight of women and children, from Mafeking to Col. Plumer. The van was blown to pieces, shot after shot went through the train, and bridge after bridge blew up after the train had passed over. The guard only was killed.
