LeesSMrs Sophie Lees the wife of a manufacturer is shown on the roll of nursing staff of Intombi Camp Hospital, Ladysmith during the siege. In the early stages of the siege there were three hospitals in Ladysmith, the Town Hall and two Churches. It was to these that the wounded of Elandslaagte, Lombards Kop and Rietfontein were cared for until shelling compelled the wounded to be moved to Intombi Camp some three miles distance. She was MID (Sir George White's) 12 Feb 99 and her QSA was presented by the King Edward VII on 27 Jul 01. The award of the RRC was LG 31 Oct 02. On 22 Jul 03 Sister Lees was admitted to the British Home and Hospital for incurables at Streatham on the nomination of Queen Alexandra, she had suffered a stroke and died there on 15 Apr 07 aged 66 years. Interestingly, the Red Cross presentation brooch is one of only three known.
RRC (VR), QAA (0), miniature QSA with clasp Defence of Ladysmith; an 18ct gold pin back brooch 32mm, with red enamel cross patee to the centre inset with a small diamond, named on reverse; another 18ct gold pin back brooch, bearing Sir George White's crest to the centre (fretted) and engraved to the edge Ladysmith Siege Nov 2nd 1899 to Feb 28th 1900, named on reverse, both in original cases of issue. All superbly mounted in a glazed frame including within two framed photographs, one printed, the other an original in a contemporary frame.  Dixon Sep 03 £4,500. DNW Nov 04 £5,500
