Field Marshal Earl Roberts in his despatch of April 2nd 1901, LG, April 16th 1901, mentions him and states that none but those on the spot can realise how much the Welsh Hospital under Professors Jones and Hughes contributed to the comfort and well-being of the sick and wounded.

Hughes | Albert Lionel Westropp | | Lieutenant | He died of enteric at Pretoria February 18th 1901. He was the son of J H Hughes, was born July 1872, and educated at Haileybury, entered the Royal Irish Fusiliers from the 4th Battalion East Surrey Regiment, June 1894, and was promoted Lieutenant June 1897. Lieutenant Hughes accompanied his battalion to South Africa in November 1899, and served with the Natal Field Force and in the Transvaal. He was mentioned in despatches LG September 10th, 1901, for his services. He was buried at Pretoria beside Lieutenant Neill, RE.

Hughes | Alfred Mahoney | | Captain | HUGHES, ALFRED MAHONEY, Captain, took part in the South African War 1899-1902, serving as Intelligence Officer. He was twice mentioned in Despatches [London Gazette, 10 September 1901, and 29 July 1902]; received the Queen's Medal with three clasps; the King's Modal with two clasps, and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 31 October 1902]: "Alfred Mahoney Hughes, Captain, Field Intelligence Department. In recognition of services during the operations in South Africa". He was afterwards Secretary of the Transvaal Repatriation Department, and Inspector of Prisons in the Transvaal; retrenched from the Transvaal Civil Service in 1907 and farmed in Cape Colony. In 1918 he was created a CBE.
