ABO (Vdkt F.J. van Eeden). City Coins August 2014.
Frederik van Eeden was 99 years old when he applied for his ABO medal in 1955. He served in the Steenkoolspruit Ward of the Middelburg Commando and mentioned previous service in the lsl Boer War at Majuba, against the Jameson Raiders and in 4 local wars against black tribes.
He claimed being wounded at Talana and being wounded and taken prisoner at Bakenlaagte on 30 October 1901 (where Col. Benson was defeated). Here, however, his memory was not 100%: he was taken PoW by Benson’s Column but this happened a week earlier (22 October 1901) at Klippoortjie. He spent the rest of the war as PoW in India.
