Gabriel Nicolaas van der Berg served with the Krugersdorp Commando during the Boer War in Natal, under General Botha and Kommandant Kemp, and was present at Colenso, Ladysmith, Platrand, and Donkerpoort. His claim was approved in November 1941, and his medal was issued in May 1942.
