ABO (Burger P J J. Smit). City Coins August 2011.

Phillipus Smith’s widow applied for his ABO in August 1941. He had served in Gen. Piet Cronje’s Commando at Magersfontein and was subsequently wounded and taken PoW at Paardeberg on 27 February 1900.

There are two Burgers named P.J.J. Smit on the published Medal Roll. However, the WWI type suspender and WWII style naming positively identifies the 1941 recipient. The other medal was issued in 1928 and would have had WWI type suspender and WWI style naming.
