ABO (Burger. O. Schunke);
BWM and VM (Bil) (2/Lt. O. Schunke)

City Coins April 2013

Otto Schunke was of German extraction. He joined the Germiston Commando in January 1900 and also served in the Pretoria Commando. He was in action at Platrand (Wagon Hill), Donkerhoek (Diamond Hill), Dalmanutha, etc. and eventually surrendered (sanctioned by General Botha and Commandant van Niekerk) to the British on account of a chronic skin disease which rendered him unfit for active service.

He did not take parole or sign the oath of allegiance during the war and performed no service for the British and was awarded the ABO medal.

During WWI he was commissioned in the S.A. Service Corps (Supplies) and served in Nyasaland.
