Peter Warberton McAfee, born Macroom, Cork 1869, served in the Boer War. At least, this is what I have been told. I have in my possession a sampler dated 1900 with his initials, union flag, thistle and clover symbols, and initials PWM.

His regiment is a complete mystery. And I cannot find any details, apart from on the medal rolls index which says P McAfee 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, 5905. Does this mean, there may be attestation papers and service records? I vaguely remember being told many years ago that he had enlisted under a different name and that there were difficulties with his pension as a result.

The only details I have on him are from 1901 census which states he is a soldier and what looks like 2nd DG r or does it say something else? Was it meant to say 2nd B RI regiment? (transcription error?). I can't find him on the 1891 census and he may have been away in india.

What I don't understand is why he would be in the UK in 1901 rather than in SA?

His son joined the London Irish Rifles in WW2 and his father had been with the RA.

Can anyone please advice me on how to progress this research further.

Thank you
