ABO (Korpl. D.P. Liebenberg). City Coins November 2009

Some 4000 British PoWs were kept at Waterval, north of Pretoria. After the fall of Pretoria the 2nd Dragoons released some 3000 of them on 6 June 1900, the remainder having been taken by train to Nooitgedacht in the Waterval Onder vicinity (Eastern Transvaal)

Although Daniel Liebenberg was nominally in the Pretoria Commando his sole service, stated on Vorm “B”, consisted of “Krijgsgevangene Kampen bewaakt” (Guarding PoW Camps).

He served under Commandant Herman, first at the Waterval Camp and then at the Waterval Onder Camp.

He claimed that he was taken PoW himself in October 1901 in Pretoria. The Boer PoW Register lists him as PoW No. 23871, age 45, captured at Pretoria 8 September 1900, but with date of receipt in Natal 16 October 1901 and arrival in India 2 November 1901.

Liebenberg could well be one of the older Prison Guards accompanying Comdt Herman in the photo on p. 652 of With the Flag to Pretoria.
