ABO (Sjt. G J. Jordaan). City Coins August 2011.

Gerrit Jacobus Jordaan enlisted in the ZAR State Artillery on 1 April 1896 and took his discharge on 4 April 1899. He must have served in the Field Telegraphy Section of the Artillery and subsequently used this knowledge and background to good effect in the Boer War: his ABO application was as “Sergeant, Field Telegraphy, Ermelo Commando ”.

He saw extensive action right throughout the war, including actions at Ladysmith, Colenso, the Boer retreat through the Eastern Transvaal, Bremersdorp (Swaziland) and Fake Chrissie.
