ABO (Burger P.J.H. Ferreira). City Coins June 2004

Although Petrus Ferreira stated service with the Griqualand Commando in his medal application, he also served with the Wolmaransstad Commando and laid down arms with them early in June 1902. He was present at the first skirmish of the Boer War (the derailment of the Armoured Train at Kraaipan on 11 October 1899) and also fought at the action at Yzer Spruit (25 Feb 1902) when the British had 5 officers and 48 men killed, with 6 officers and 124 men wounded. With copies of Vorm “B”, p4860-4862 of the LG of 29 July 1902 (dealing with Boer surrender of arms in the Western Transvaal) and extracts from the “Times History of the War in SA” detailing the Action of Yzer Spruit.
