Helgaard De Jager served with distinction around Ladysmith as adjutant to General Louis Botha and also as head of staff for General Botha with the rank of Major. He was present at the 1902 peace negotiations. During the Great War he served as a Major with the British Forces and was responsible the formation of De Jager’s Scouts that operated in both the South West and East African theatres. He was awarded a British War and Victory Medal for his service. Helgaard De Jager died in 1924 of Blackwater Fever
