He claimed extensive service, including Belmont, Magersfontein, Waterworks (Sanna’s Post) and Retiefsnek. His initial application was for a DTD as well as an ABO medal with his rank stated as Veldkornet. Comdt J. Jacobs signed the ABO application, but, when Vorm “A” for the DTD was submitted to him, Jacobs realised that he had made a mistake and said that he had actually known Deale only as Burgher in his Commando. Deale replied that he wasn’t a “Hoof Veldkornet” but an Assistant Veldkornet: that is why he was allowed to retain his rifle when they surrendered to Genl. “Elliard” (Elliot). However, he was quite happy to have the medal issued to the rank of Burger. Vorm “A” was duly cancelled and Vorm “B” altered.
