ABO (Burger D.E. Botha)

According to his Vorm “B” application made in January 1942, David Edward Botha, a Cape Rebel from the farm Rietvlei, Cradock District joined General Kritzinger’s Commando on 5 May 1901. Kritzinger’s second invasion of the Cape only took place on 19 May 1901 and it can safely be assumed that Botha’s recollection of actual dates, 40 years after the event, was not all that precise.

Botha was one of the Kritzinger men who evaded capture when the railway line was crossed.

He was sentenced to 1 year’s imprisonment with hard labour for High Treason under arms in Cradock on 7 June 1902, but the Royal Commission subsequently released him.
