ABO (Burger J. C. Anthonissen)

Johannes Cornelius Anthonissen was born on 24 July 1881 and joined the Calvinia Commando in March 1901. This formation was commanded by Commandant Abrham Louw, the commander notorious for the murder of Abraham Esau. It is unknown if Anthonissen was present for this incident however he was certainly present for the siege of Tontelboschkolk in late 1901 and the ambush at Middelpos in February 1902.

Anthonissen finally capitulated on 31 May 1902, after the war he married Jacoba Maria Moolman Louw (nee Steenkamp). Their marriage certificate states that she was a widow and quite possibly a relative of Commandant Louw as he was a landowner in the Calvinia region.

Spink have separated the ABO from the Great War medals and CAF LS&GC saying they are the 'campaign group awarded to Lieutenant Johannes Cornelius Anthonissen, thought to be the recipient's father.'
