1. Moves

The brigade will march to-morrow morning at same time and in same order with, exception of T.M.I. will lead and S.H. will follow R.H.A.

2. Requisitions.

The special attention of all concerned is directed to N.A.O. No. 2 of 19th inst.

3. Grass Fires.

As in spite of recently published division order, pointing out the necessity of the utmost care being taken to prevent grass fires on line of march, these fires occasionally occur without doubt from carelessness of individuals in dropping lighted matches. It may be necessary should there be a continuance of such to prevent all smoking in the line of march. It is to be hoped that there will be no necessity to have recourse to such a measure; but the inconvenience and even danger to the column is so great from these fires that if they can be stopped in no other way, smoking will have to be prohibited. Officers commanding units will cause this order to be made known to all troops and native followers under their command.

4. Divine service.

Voluntary service will be held on arrival in camp to-morrow as follows - C of E, 3rd Brigade Camp, 5.30 pm, R.C., Scottish Rifles Camp, 5 p.m. Presbyterians, Scottish Rifles Camp 6 p.m.

July 22nd, 1900

No. 1 Detail

Field Officer To-morrow: Major Jarvis
Orderly Officer To-Morrow: Lieut. Fall
Next for Duty: Lieut. Ketchen

No. 2 Outposts

The O.C. in command of that portion of the regiment that forms the advance will as soon as the column is halted for the night place cossack posts at proper distances to left and right front and the right and left rear of camp. These posts will be as many as are necessary to obtain a good view of the country and protect the camp from surprises. He will leave small supports when necessary. This is to be done without any further instructions after he has ascertained that the column is halted for the night. The advance party of the advance guard will not halt until the column is halted on its camping ground as it is necessary that they should hold the position until relieved by the cossack outposts. When there are flankers employed for the column , the flanking patrols are to move parallel to the column and as far out as the right flanking patrol of the advance party. Everyone should know it is the duty of the outposts to prevent the column being attacked while unprepared, consequently they should hold their ground and prevent the enemy from stealing in on the column it the attack appears to warrant it. A good deal of sound judgement and common sense is required to carry out these instructions. No military duties are more honourable or require more ability to perform than screening and protecting the Army. Officers and men on outposts, advance and rear guard and flanking duties will try and not engage the enemy if it can be avoided as it causes a great deal of delay. A skilful enemy will always try to delay a column.

3. Ammunition

Officers of troops will be responsible that every man carries 150 rounds of ammunition.

4. Brands

Squadron Officers will at once have the letter of their squadron branded on every horse in their squadron, the letter must be put immediately after the S. brand.

No. 4 Stealing

It has come to the notice of the o.c. that men of Strathcona v s Horse have been hanging about the waggons of the A.S.C. One was seen stealing port wine last night. The O.C. wishes to point out that in his opinion any man who would act in this manner and bring disgrace upon a corps composed largely of respectable men is a villain and should he be discovered will be tried by general court-martial.

Furthermore it is the duty of every honest man in Strathcona v s Horse to prevent this and report the same should it come to his knowledge. Should any more complaints with regard to such conduct be received from Supply Officer of the A.S.C. an additional guard will be put on for the purpose of protecting government property in his charge.

No. 5 Horses

The following horses have been brought up by Lt. Adamson are hereby taken on the strength of the regiment and posted with draft to “C” Squadron.

No. 6 Side Arms

It has been brought to the notice of O.C. that a number of men parade for guards, picquets & other duties without side-arms and other equipment. If these articles have been lost they must be replaced and the men made to pay for them. A thorough investigation must be made by squadron officers into the cause of these articles being lost.

No N.C.O. or man must parade for any duty other than a fatigue without all their arms and equipment unless otherwise ordered. Any deviation from this order will be severely dealt with.

No. 7 Duties

The files in rear of the troops in line omitted to insist upon the centre guides covering the troop leaders but made the men touch in to the center of the squadron.

Men were allowed to shuffle about when standing at attention when it is well known to all that corrections should only be made when men are ordered to dress or when on the move. The O.C. regrets that he should again call to the attention of the Officers and N.C.O.'s to these important details. More attention must be paid to these points in the future.
