Good evening:
This is my first time on this website, I hope I am using the right category, plese forgive if I am not and let me know where I should place such enquiries.
I have in my possession a 'Pass' which is now very faded and possibly written in Afrikaans. Although the actual pass is very faded (but can still be read with strong light and a magnifying glass) there is a separate note with it which reads

" A Boer pass given to William Carter when he was attacked and taken prisoner by the Boers in The Transvaal War on Jan 19th 1901 "

William Carter was my maternal grandfather, and I was only young when my grandmother died and for some reason he was never mentioned.
I am now retired and have the time to research such matters, so if anyone could enlighten me further, or guide me on my way to finding out what became of hime after the war ended. I have no middle initials nor any idea of which regiment, but other research I am carrying out may enlighten me on this.
Thank you
Maggie

Morning Maggie

Interesting artefact.

The official casualty rolls do not show a "W Carter" being a casualty on that date, but the casualty rolls do not show many men who were taken PoW.

I would suggest you start by trying to find service papers on FindmyPast and then Ancestry.

If you could post an image of the pass that may reveal more clues.

Maggie

A transcription of the Afrikaans (Dutch) wording might lead to a translation and reveal more of the circumstances under which the pass was issued.
