Private Heard was taken prisoner of war at Korannafontein, 23/5/1901. He was subsequently released.

Gilbert Boutcher Heard was born in 1880 in Kensington, Surrey. He was baptized on 5 November 1880 in Kensington. He was the son of James G (1853-), a Londoner, and Ellen Heard (1855). He had a sister Gladys M (1883) and a brother Eric (1885). In 1890, he attended St. Margaret’s Technical Day School & Westminster City (Day School). According to the 1891 census for Lambeth, his father was a clerk and they had one servant/governess/domestic. He was a bank clerk who enlisted in Paget’s Horse, 51st Coy, 12th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry on 25/26 February 1901 at the Police Court on Marlborough Street. He was 20 and a half years old; 5’11”, 147 Lbs. with brown hair and blue eyes. He was CoE. He was posted Home from, 26/02/1901 to 12/03/1901 (15 days) and then posted in SA from 12//3/1901 to 18/05/1902 (1 year and 62 days) and then home again from 14/05/1902 to 14/06/1902 (32 days). He served a total of 1 year and 109 days. His conduct was “very good” and he was discharged as medically unfit. His father lived at 45 Fairlawn Ave. in Chiswick. He was awarded the QSA with above five clasps.

In the 1911 census, he was a single boarder at Emily Patstone’s (1852) home. She was a widow and her sister Sarah Shephard (1830) lived with her. Herbert Theodore Howell (1864) and certificate school master and Gilbert Boutcher Heard who was a secretary at a limited company were staying there. On 28 November 1912, he married Eleanor Campbell (1880) of Rollesby, Norfolk. She was the third daughter of Alexander Campbell. According to the 1921 Census they had no children and lived in Well Head Cottage. Heard was a process engraver at The Half Tone Engraving Co. Ltd. At 25 Farrington Ave Ec4. Heard died in Surrey, in 1934 when he was only 54 years old.
