Iain

Thank you for posting a very interesting link.

Steinaecker's Horse may be unique amongst Boer War regiments in the attention it has received from archaeologists. Googling 'Steinaecker's Horse excavations in the Kruger National Park' brings up several links to excavations carried out by a team from the University of Pretoria. Although its existence was brief, operating in a remote and unhealthy region has preserved some of the imprints left behind by this remarkable regiment.

Hello Brett,
Whilst Steinaecker's Horse was raised on the 7th of November 1900 in Pietermaritzburg, it should be remembered that they were not actually disbanded until well after the war, on the 7th of February 1903 in Komatipoort, though, this was necessary for geographic reasons, so really the period of it's existence is not too bad for a class C unit.

Thanks for the further information, Brett & Frank.

When I stayed in Kaapsehoop, I was told that the road through the village used to be the main road going east as the pass hadn't yet been blasted. This only happened when they built the N4 to carry traffic through to Maputo, (Lorenco Marks.) Apparently at the time Nelspruit was insignificant.

Hello Iain,
Frank Steinaecker's men played a very important roll and this reflected in the wages that they were being paid whilst operating in this area, a lot of men and munitions were coming down via portguese territory, a very hard campaign for these men, with new and interesting ways to loose your life.
Kind regards Frank

Anyone interested
The activities of this unit are covered in the book "Steinaecker's Horsemen" by William Woolmore. Cannot find an ISBN number - however the book should be easy to find.
