I can't resist posting this picture of djb (sitting) shooting a Boer Mauser at Bisley yesterday. He was astonishingly proficient, and could put every shot through a playing-card at 100m.

Rifles used were: Boer Mauser rifle and carbine, Lee Enfield rifle and carbine, Martini Enfield, Martini Henry, Monkeytail, and Guedes.
The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.

Rob,

Yesterday's event was excellent and very much enjoyed by all. Your organisation to bring everyone and a wide range of period firearms together was excellent.

It was a great opportunity to fire these firearms and understand a little more of those who wielded them during the conflict. It gave me a new appreciation of how challenging firing from a horse must have been.

Very much looking forward to the event next year, Rob.

A variant of the Martini Henry, a firearm that was in service for almost 50 years

I do not have a picture of it but Rob demonstrated how the Boers loaded 5 rounds into the Mauser using a clip into which the bullets had been inserted. It then took less than a second to push the bullets through the clip into the magazine.

My son Michael, who is not a member here, thoroughly enjoyed the occasion and hopes you will repeat it in the future.
Kind regards
