There is a photograph of the Cape Police and Thomas Little Number 1670 was an ancestor of mine.

Is there anyway that the names of the men in the photo were recorded?

I would like to know for sure which one was Thomas.

Hello LittlePye,

Sadly I have never come across a record of named photographs to the Cape Police. In fact photo's to the CP are very few and far between.

I can tell you that Thomas attested into the CP in September 1902 but he would have left before May 1905 as his Reg number was given to one Leo Jones who attested in May 1905. It was very common that a new recruit took the number of a man that had recently left either as time expired or discharged by purchase or for some misdemeanor.

Hello Adrian,
What sort of "misdemeanors" are we talking about here, was there a particular favourite?
Kind regards Frank

Frank,

Anything from continuous absence from morning parade, drinking (which was a bit of a problem in those days), being labelled as a worthless character and my favourite "found inappropriately dressed" in the local Hotel !!!

I always look forward to perusing through the discharge forms when I get the chance.

Unfortunately, the sins of discharged Cape Policemen were not always recorded. The CP records of the man whose medals are shown below were checked by Adrian, but he could find no record of why this man's CP service came to an abrupt and ignominious end. Most of the other significant events in the man's life were recorded, so this missing one is very frustrating!
